Patriot Ambulance donated a much-needed automated external defibrillator (AED) to the newly renovated Hudson Senior Center.

The defibrillator analyzes the heart’s rhythm for any abnormalities and, if necessary, directs the rescuer to deliver an electrical shock to the victim. This shock, called defibrillation, may help the heart re-establish a rhythm of its own.

Patriot Ambulance, under the leadership and direction of Mr. David Walton and Mr. Maurice Ryan, has been providing high quality emergency ambulance services without interruption to the Town of Hudson since 2003. Patriot Ambulance and its dedicated staff will also provide training to the senior center staff in the proper usage of this lifesaving device as well as making sure they are properly maintained, free of charge.

“We are happy to be in a position to give back to the Town of Hudson. The AED, along with the CPR training we will provide the senior center staff, will allow for high quality patient care in the first few minutes until first responders arrive. This will in no doubt give the victim the best fighting chance” Mr. Walton said.

Congratulations to Marlborough Hospital for being ranked #2 best hospital in Massachusetts to survive a heart attack. (UMass Worcester, the parent hospital being ranked first in Massachusetts and New England).

We are proud to be part of the survival chain in the City. Over a year ago, Patriot Ambulance, Marlborough Hospital and the City of Marlborough entered into a unique partnership to better serve heart attack patients. The agreement allows for the utilization of the 911 system that then dispatches one of Patriot’s 911 ambulances to Marlborough Hospital to expedite the transport of STEMI (ST segment elevation myocardial infarction or heart attack) to the Cardiac Catheterization Lab at UMMMC.

We are proud to have led the initiative for this unique approach to patient care that allows for a significant decrease in door-to-balloon time.

MARLBOROUGH —

Jim Bourdelais is alive today because he followed his gut.

When he felt the first twinges of chest pains on May 10, he ignored it. After all, he had always been healthy and heart disease didn’t run in his family.

But when the pains got stronger, Bourdelais’ wife Jackie said she would drive him to Marlborough Hospital. While the hospital was just a half mile away, Bourdelais said to call 911 instead. It was a decision that would save his life.

Firefighters Steve Cavallo, Jeff Gogan and Joe Popek were the first to arrive at the Bourdelais home, and were concerned about what they saw.

“He was totally gray,” recalled Cavallo. The firefighters got him onto a gurney and took him to the waiting ambulance, which had arrived a few moments later.

But minutes later, before the ambulance even left the driveway, Jim Bourdelais had a massive heart attack.

Shortly after being placed on the ambulance’s heart monitor by paramedic Geneta Rose-Maclean, Bourdelais’ heart began beating erratically and required four shocks from a defibrillator. Maclean, paramedic Bryan Urato and Gogan worked to stabilize him.

“If we hadn’t shocked him, he wouldn’t be sitting here today,” said Gogan.

Once the ambulance arrived at Marlborough Hospital, doctors had to decide whether they should airlift him to UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester, where the most serious heart cases get sent. A quick EKG showed that Bourdelais had suffered from a myocardial infarction, which occurs when a coronary artery is totally blocked by a blood clot.

Bourdelais had been conscious when he arrived at the hospital. He told Maclean, “I don’t know what you did to me, but I feel better.”

It wouldn’t last. He soon lost consciousness and went into full cardiac arrest. While a helicopter had been called in to take him to UMass, doctors judged that Bourdelais was not stable enough to survive the trip.

For 47 minutes, doctors Taryn Kennedy and Tara Brigham, nurses Wendy Mallette and Sue Casacili, and the Patriot Ambulance crew tried to save him through defibrillation and massaging his heart. By then they knew that Bourdelais had suffered a type of heart attack known as a “widow maker” because it was often fatal.

“It was really scary,” recalled Jackie Bourdelais. “At one point, Dr. Kennedy was giving me an update when she heard ‘code blue,’ (which means that a patient is near death).”

“He was having a cardiac massage, which was giving him a pulse because he didn’t have one of his own,” Kennedy recalled.

At one point, the doctors thought Bourdelais would die. But then, miraculously, his pulse returned on its own. After doctors stabilized him, he was able to make the trip to Worcester, where doctors in the cardiac catheterization lab were able to remove the clot blocking his coronary artery.

Two days later, Bourdelais woke up in the UMass Intensive Car Unit, totally unaware of where he was. He looked at Jackie, who told him what happened.

“I want to go home,” Jim said. “Can’t we do this as an outpatient?”

A week later, he came to Marlborough Hospital to thank the people who saved his life. And a few weeks ago all of them – firefighters, ambulance crew, doctors and nurses – gathered together at the hospital to reflect on the life-saving episode.

Bourdelais said he has changed his lifestyle since his brush with death. He works out at the hospital’s cardiac rehabilitation center three days a week, and cut out sugar and salt in his diet.

“The whole thing that happened to me is still kind of surreal,” he said.

Urato said the episode showed the importance of calling for help right away in an emergency. “Don’t ever try to drive yourself,” he said.

The cardiac monitor features 12-lead ECG capabilities, cardiac pacing, cardiac monitoring and defibrillation.

Partners in Health is an non-profit organization (based in Boston, Massachusetts) dedicated to providing health care for the poor. PIH operates clinics in Haiti, Peru, Russia, USA, Rwanda, Lesotho and Malawi.

In 2007, the charity-evaluation organization Givewell recommended PIH as one of the top three places to donate for “Saving lives.” Givewell concluded of PIH: “We have relatively little ability to quantify its impact on life outcomes, but our best estimates suggest it may be saving lives for somewhere around $3500 each, not including many general-health benefits it provides beyond saving lives.”[1]

LAWRENCE — Patriot Ambulance has donated a much-needed automated external defibrillator to the Beacon Club, a satellite of the Boys & Girls Club of Lawrence, housed in the Beacon Courts housing project on the city’s south side.

The defibrillator analyzes the heart’s rhythm for any abnormalities and, if necessary, directs the rescuer to deliver an electrical shock to the victim. This shock, called defibrillation, may help the heart re-establish a rhythm of its own. It is about the size of a laptop computer.

“This is a critical piece of equipment and one that the club needed to have on its premises. We are very grateful for this generous gift by Patriot Ambulance. It could save a life at the club,” said Markus Fischer, executive director.

Patriot Ambulance is a locally owned and managed company that provides emergency and non-emergency medical transport.
